How does Google determine a good website from a bad one?
But how is Google able to determine which web pages provide the best experience? It is focusing on three Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). These are the main three things that have an impact on a user’s experience.
Websites ranked highest in the system will be the ones with the finest and fastest working Core Web Vitals. Web pages will receive a score for each of these three important factors from good, to needs improvement, to poor. Google scores depend on how many seconds it takes a webpage to complete this. A page that loads in two point five or fewer seconds is scored as good. The First Input Delay, or FID, is time to interactivity. It’s how quickly a page responds to a visitor inputting information. This can be clicking a button or submitting details. Again, internet users don’t have the patience to wait a long time for a page to process their input. This is why this specific page experience signal is so important.
If the page responds in 100 milliseconds or less, it’s good. If it takes between 100 milliseconds and 300 milliseconds, it needs improvement. Anything more than 300 milliseconds is too slow and is considered poor.
The last Core Web Vital Google is prioritizing in the upcoming update is Cumulative Layout Shift or CLS. This is the measure of visual stability. Pages wiggle and move around as they load and the less they do this, the better. Visitors don’t want to go to a page where they accidentally press the wrong thing because of page movement. It wastes their time and worsens their experience.
The top website pages should have a CLS of 0.1 or less. This is considered good. If their CLS is between 0.1 and 0.25 it needs improvement. Once the CLS is more than 0.25, it’s poor.
