Google is making a pretty big change this month. The goal is to make internet users’ experiences even better than it already is. Google is putting an update in place: the Google Page Experience Algorithm Update.

The focus of the update

This update is focused on the current ranking system. When an internet user searches for something, whether it’s a question about a celebrity or an inquiry about a new movie, web pages on the topic pages pop up

As of now, the most relevant web pages are the highest in the search results. This upcoming update is now prioritizing internet users’ experiences on pages. So, the highest-ranked websites will be relevant and provide a great experience for the people who visit the page.

How does Google determine a good website from a bad one?

But how is Google able to determine which web pages provide the best experience? It is focusing on three Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). These are the main three things that have an impact on a user’s experience.

core web vitalsWebsites ranked highest in the system will be the ones with the finest and fastest working Core Web Vitals. Web pages will receive a score for each of these three important factors from good, to needs improvement, to poor. These scores will determine the ability websites have for providing the best experience for visitors. This will decide where each website will rank in search results.

The Largest Contentful Paint, or LCP, is the page loading speed. More specifically, it is how fast it takes the largest visible element to load. The biggest graphic on a page takes the most time to load, this is why the loading speed of a web page is based on how fast it appears.

Google scores depend on how many seconds it takes a webpage to complete this. A page that loads in two point five or fewer seconds is scored as good. This is how fast it would like all the top pages to load. The quicker the better. If a page loads between two point five seconds and four seconds, it needs improvement. If a page takes more than four seconds to load it’s considered poor. During the four seconds a page takes to load, the visitor would have already left by then. We at Peth Digital Edge help you tackle this situation by providing you unmatched SEO service.

The First Input Delay, or FID, is time to interactivity. It’s how quickly a page responds to a visitor inputting information. This can be clicking a button or submitting details. Again, internet users don’t have the patience to wait a long time for a page to process their input. This is why this specific page experience signal is so important.

If the page responds in 100 milliseconds or less, it’s good. If it takes between 100 milliseconds and 300 milliseconds, it needs improvement. Anything more than 300 milliseconds is too slow and is considered poor.

The last Core Web Vital Google is prioritizing in the upcoming update is Cumulative Layout Shift or CLS. This is the measure of visual stability. Pages wiggle and move around as they load and the less they do this, the better. Visitors don’t want to go to a page where they accidentally press the wrong thing because of page movement. It wastes their time and worsens their experience.

google page speedThe top website pages should have a CLS of 0.1 or less. This is considered good. If their CLS is between 0.1 and 0.25 it needs improvement. Once the CLS is more than 0.25, it’s poor. Visual stability is very important. The consequences of pressing the wrong thing on a website can range from easily fixable to irreparable for a user.

The webpage owners reading this don’t have to worry about how they’re going to measure the score of their Core Web Vitals and make improvements before Google ranks them. Google is providing a page experience report that will be able to calculate your page experience signals before the update. It is also able to access other factors vital to customer experience.

The Google page experience algorithm update coming this June of 2021 will change how people experience the internet. It will motivate website owners to provide their fastest web pages and by extension, heighten the Google experience for everyone.
